Renowned land use attorney has served on organization’s board since 2015

Susan Trevarthen, a Partner with Weiss Serota Helfman Cole & Bierman, P.L., and Chair of the Firm’s Public Sector Land Use and Planning Group was appointed Chair of the 1000 Friends of Florida Board of Directors.

For the last five years, Trevarthen has served on the organization’s board and led the search for its current president. She also oversaw the organization’s Legal Advocacy Committee in 2019. Trevarthen officially began in her new role on Jan. 1.

Since 1986, 1000 Friends of Florida has focused on saving special places and building better communities. Over the course of nearly 35 years, 1000 Friends has initiated and helped secure the passage of vital statewide programs like Preservation 2000 and Florida Greenways. Its attorneys have successfully argued dozens of legal cases setting important statewide precedents.

"I am honored by the Board's decision to entrust me with its leadership," Trevarthen said. "It is exciting to have this opportunity to come full circle and steward the organization to which co-founders Dr. John M. DeGrove and Nathaniel Reed devoted so much of their energies, and which has played such an important role in the history of Florida’s growth management policy."

Trevarthen, who earned an A.B. in public policy from Duke University and received her J.D. and master’s in city and regional planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has held leadership positions in The Florida Bar's Section for Environmental and Land Use Law and Section for City, County and Local Government Law; serves on the Legislative Policy Committee of APA Florida; and serves on the Board of Citizens for Scenic Florida. She is also co-chair of the Land Use Section of the International Municipal Lawyers' Association. Her practice focuses on land use, planning and zoning matters for local governments. She is based out of the Firm’s Broward office.
