RESCHEDULED: MOCA Presents SYZYGY - October 13

9/23/16

What: During National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15), Americans celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions made by Hispanic and Latin Americans. The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is celebrating by featuring the exhibit SYZYGY. The exhibit unites 10 Miami-based Hispanic women artists whose work explores themes of identity, sexuality, power and spirituality. Each piece articulates a confrontation or engagement with the collective unconscious.

The term “syzygy” is defined as the Greek term meaning “union.” In Astronomy, it describes a conjunction or opposition of celestial bodies such as the sun and the moon, or alignment of three celestial bodies such as sun, moon and earth. The exhibit SYZYGY allows for a new way to experience correlation. It offers an opportunity to embody diverse manifestations of duality and interrogation from a unique Miami, female, Hispanic perspective.

Guests can enjoy bites courtesy of Punch Cuban Delight restaurant and cocktails by Zamaca liquor during the opening reception. The SYZYGY exhibition is also sponsored by the Ware Foundation.

Who: Exhibition artist Nereida Garcia Ferraz was honored by the North Miami city council as the official Hispanic Heritage Month artist. Some of the most renown and poignant artists in the exhibition are Sandra Ramos, Nina Surel, Charo Oquet, Nereida Garcia Ferraz and Natasha Perdomo. The exhibition mixes mature, internationally renowned artists with emerging local artists, in keeping with MOCA’s mission to support local artists while maintaining the museum’s global prestige and level of excellence.

Curated by: Tiffany Madera

Public Program Manager of MOCA and Curator of SYZGY

"In curating this show, I was compelled by each artist's depth and commitment to the female voice in the face of duality, oppression, rupture and disembodiment,” says Madera. “This exhibition offers a new way of traveling the feminine psyche, which allows for a fuller, more holistic understanding of human experience. Syzygy can be understood on many levels; each work addresses a unique interpretation of this idea. These works form acts of resistance with a varied expression of what it means to be female and Latina and its many manifestations across multiple diasporas.”
