“Lady in Red” Turns 20 with "A Night in Rio" Jay Leno Headlines Palm Beach Event
On Saturday, December 7, 2013, LIFE will celebrate 20 extraordinary years of saving lives, helping people help themselves, improving the quality of life for families in need and encouraging young Americans to become leaders by helping others. The 20th Annual "Lady in Red" Gala, "A Night in Rio", will transform The Mar-a-Lago Club, Palm Beach into a Brazilian paradise with “A Night in Rio”. Always the much-anticipated start of the Palm Beach social season, the gala, featuring America’s Favorite Funny-man and legendary Tonight Show host Jay Leno, will begin at 6:30 pm with cocktails followed by dinner and dancing...Rio style! The evening will also feature the Palm Beach Symphony, Broadway hits sung by the 50 member Nova Choir and dancing to the music of the Sultans of Swing. Chairs are Lois Pope and Patrick Park.
In 1977 a young comedian named Jay Leno made his first appearance on The Tonight Show; little did he know that less than 20 years later he would become the host of that very show. A regular on the variety program The Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. Show, by mid-1980s, Leno hosted his first comedy special on TV: Jay Leno and the American Dream. Around this same period, he made numerous successful appearances on late-night TV, particularly Late Night with David Letterman. Later that year, he signed a deal with NBC that made him one of two permanent guest hosts of The Tonight Show. He became the only guest host two years later.
In 1992, Johnny Carson surprised many by retiring from his long-standing role as America's beloved and premier talk show host and Leno stepped in to take over hosting duties full time. With the exception of a brief prime-time stint, Jay Leno has sat behind that famed desk entertaining night owls with his unique brand of comedy ever since.
Leno has been married to wife Mavis Nicholson since 1980. They live in Los Angeles, where he spends his spare time working on his collection of classic cars and motorcycles.
Tickets to the" Lady in Red" Gala are $700 per person and $500 for those under the age of 45. All proceeds from the evening will benefit LIFE’s partnership with American Humane Association (AHA), which includes a program to protect the voiceless and the vulnerable in our society - abused and neglected animals. Programs that will be served are in Palm Beach County, including a large Pet Mobile for adoption purposes.
This past spring the first Lois Pope Red Star Rescue Vehicle was dedicated and within hours of the devastation caused by tornadoes in Moore, Oklahoma, this vehicle was deployed to help animals in need. A second Lois Pope Red Star Rescue Vehicle for the northeastern United States will be added in October 2013, expanding the reach of AHA services even further.
