Orlando Sheds Light on the State of the Market, Investment Strategies and the Future Outlook

Market volatility and the trends and patterns that lead to increased instability was the focus of a recent and exclusive conference hosted by Coral Gables Trust Company (CGTC), the largest independent and privately held trust company headquartered in South Florida with over $1.2 billion in assets under management.

Organizers of the CGTC-founded “Dynamic Wealth Speaker Series” welcomed dozens of business owners, community leaders and clients to the private luncheon event at the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove, which featured an informative presentation by nationally renowned market strategist, Philip Orlando, senior vice president and chief equity strategist of Federated Investors, one of the nation’s largest investment managers with $397.6 billion in assets under management.

For the last 20 years, Orlando has been a regular contributor to several of CNBC’s programs, including “Squawk Box,” “Squawk on the Street,” “Power Lunch,” “Closing Bell” and “Nightly Business Report” as well as Fox Business News, Bloomberg, Reuters, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.

Orlando, who is responsible for the formulation of Federated’s views on the economy, the financial markets and the firm’s investment positioning strategies, gave an in-depth presentation on “Why is market volatility your friend? Seriously!” highlighting the state of the market, its key drivers and impact of legislative changes in relation to executive and congressional partisan control.

Topics included:

  • The importance of separating political bias from investment judgement
  • The confluence of seasonal risks, such as Fed leadership and policy transition, and the presidential and political election cycles, presenting heightened volatility
  • Key elements of Trump’s Tax Cuts & Jobs Act
  • Fiscal policy matters
  • Recession risks and accelerated wage growth

“It was an honor to have Phil as our guest speaker,” said James W. Davidson, Chairman and CEO of Coral Gables Trust Company. “Phil’s renowned expertise is representative of the type of high-level financial insight that we seek to deliver to our clients and the local community.”
