National School Breakfast Week Promotes Broward County Public Schools’ Free Universal Breakfast with Fun-Filled Events

From March 5-16, Broward County Public Schools Food & Nutrition Services will celebrate National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) to encourage more students to take advantage of the healthy breakfast choices available through Broward Schools’ free universal breakfast program. This year’s theme “I Heart School Breakfast,” will feature fun-filled District-wide student activities and events to promote the importance of healthy eating.

Eating a nutritious meal provides students with an energizing way to start their school day. During the two weeks, students will receive a variety of school breakfast items each day, such as French Toast Sticks, Pork Sausage Patties, Fiesta Cheese Omelets, Mini Banana Pancakes, Mini Breaded Chicken Filets and Cinnamon Buns. Broward County Public Schools NSBW activities include:

  • NSBW coloring and activity sheets will available during breakfast for students to learn more about the importance of eating a healthy breakfast every morning.
  • Students will be encouraged to post about their participation on social media with the hashtags #PowerUp, #NSBW18 and their school name. Students who participate will be entered in a contest to receive one of four Beats Studio Wireless Headphones.
  • Students can participate in an art coloring contest based on the “I Heart School Breakfast” theme. Students will be encouraged to creatively display their knowledge of good nutrition and school breakfast. Teachers will send participating students’ artwork to the District for judging. Elementary and middle school first place winners will receive a gift certificate for a new bike, the high school winner will receive an iPad Mini and runner-ups will receive movie tickets.
  • Elementary and middle school students who participate in National School Breakfast Week will have the opportunity to win daily prizes.

National School Breakfast Week will emphasize the healthy breakfast items that are offered daily at Broward County Public Schools. The United States school breakfast program serves more than 14 million students across the country every day. Last year, more than 2,000 more breakfast meals were served during National School Breakfast in Broward County high schools and the week following.

“National School Breakfast Week is the perfect time to celebrate all of the free, healthy options we’re serving every day in Broward schools,” said Mary Mulder, director of BCPS Food and Nutrition Services. “With this year’s ‘I Heart School Breakfast’ theme and many fun-filled activities planned, we are looking forward to raising awareness of the important role that school breakfast programs play in student achievement.”

The USDA regulates what is served in schools, mandating the offering of appropriate servings of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, low fat milks and high-quality proteins. BCPS registered dietitians review the nutritional stats for new recipes and products served to our students.
