The eighth annual Ranse Volleyball Classic recently raised $30,000 for the Ranse Jones Stroke Awareness Fund benefiting Broward Health North (BHN).
The volleyball classic, this year held on Nov. 4 and 5, is an annual event in honor of Ranse Jones, a professional volleyball player and Broward County native, who passed away in 2010 from a ruptured brain aneurysm when he was just 34 years old.
This year’s tournament attracted a total of 240 players from across the U.S. and the world and included Kendra Van Zwieten, Jonathan Rogers, Kevin Craig, top players with the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP), Gergely Takacs, from Budapest, Hungary and many more.
At this year’s event, Broward Health North partnered with the Dig the Beach Volleyball Series to increase attendance and participation. Founded in 1991, it is the longest standing and largest series of its kind in the U.S. with tournaments throughout Florida.

The Ranse Jones Stroke Awareness Fund’s mission is to raise money for stroke education, awareness, treatment, care, and support for the community. “We are proud to continue to support this wonderful tournament,” said Nora Uhrig, CNRN, BSN, Director, Neurological Institute at Broward Health North. “The funds donated have allowed Broward Health North to provide the latest advances in stroke treatment as well as educate the community on how to recognize the signs of stroke and how to care for someone who has had one.”
The fund has raised more than $220,000 during the last eight years and has supported the creation of the Florida Stroke Symposium. Each year the symposium brings together more than 190 health-care professionals from around the country. The fifth annual symposium was held this past May where 12 of the nation’s leading stroke experts presented evidence-based information aimed at keeping physicians and health-care professionals informed regarding the latest techniques and best practices for stroke care.
In addition, the fund supports The Ranse Jones Resource Room, a designated area on the stroke floor at BHN where families of stroke patients can relax and gather information while at the hospital.
Broward Health North's Stroke Center is recognized as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by the Agency for Healthcare Administration and provides the highest level of care for stroke patients. The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association honored the Stroke Center with the Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite Plus for the third consecutive year. This distinction is the highest honor a hospital can receive for stroke care and it acknowledges Broward Health North’s commitment to providing the most appropriate stroke treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines.
