HeartWell’s Women’s Heart Health Program Focuses on Keeping Women Healthier and Out of the Hospital

Women have long considered heart disease more of a man’s issue, although statistics show that heart disease is the number one killer in women, they still don’t perceive it to be a serious concern.

HeartWell LLP, a practice comprising 26 cardiologists in ten locations throughout Miami-Dade County, has enhanced its measures to increase women’s cardiac health through education, lifestyle modification, preventive measures and treatment.   The program offers women guidance to establish heart healthy lifestyles and recognize the warning signs of a heart attack.

HeartWell’s Dr. Paula Montana de la Cadena is spearheading the program at HeartWell, working closely with WomenHeart, The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, which trains heart attack survivors to host peer-to-peer support groups for other women who survived serious heart events.

“We are making good strides with the program,” said Dr. Montana.  “As a woman and a physician, I feel comfortable providing advice and a personal viewpoint for other women.”

Dr. Montana says that the goal is to create an overall program for women from their 20s to well into their 70s that thoroughly evaluates their health from head-to-toe.   Doctors with specialties in various disciplines, including cardiovascular health, will work cooperatively to provide women with a robust assessment of their well-being.

Dr. Montana notes that the practice has always made women as much of a priority as men.  Her HeartWell colleague Dr. Alvaro Gomez, who has worked to support the practice’s efforts to keep women aware of the risk factors and strategies to mitigate them, says that with Dr. Montana leading the initiatives, he is confident the program will be very successful.

WomenHeart is a nationwide corps of volunteers with more than 800 women living with or at risk of heart disease.   These women have been trained to be advocates and educators as well as network coordinators at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.   On the more local level, members are helping spread the word to friends, families and colleagues that women must be aware of themselves and their hearts.

HeartWell is dedicated to becoming part of that critical network and to reduce the incidence of heart attacks in women.
