16-Unit Building Honors Celia Cruz, Iconic Cuban Activist and ‘Queen of Salsa’
The late salsa music legend, Celia Cruz, was a staunch crusader for the rights of the Cuban people. Through her brilliant, energetic music, the “Queen of Salsa” was an activist and advocate for freedom and justice.
Cruz’s musical and social legacies live in the hearts of Cubans everywhere. In the Little Havana community of Miami, she will be celebrated with a new residential apartment building that will be home to students, vacation travelers and businesspeople for decades to come.
On Friday, October 20th at 10:00 a.m., Miami Mayor, Tomás Regalado, will cut the ribbon to kick-off construction of Plaza Celia, a four-story, 16-unit residential apartment building to be built at 2640 SW 12th St. (corner of 27th Avenue and SW 12th Street) by Metronomic. Inc., a Miami-based real estate development company that specializes in projects that benefit the community.
The ribbon-cutting event will include live entertainment, appetizers and beverages.
According to Metronomic President Ricky Trinidad, the Plaza Celia building lobby will be adorned with images of Cruz’s life, as well as excerpts from her biography and legacy.
“Celia Cruz is a hero in the Cuban community,” Trinidad said. “We wanted to recognize her legacy as a musician and as a humanitarian by naming the building in her honor.”
Trinidad said Plaza Celia will offer off-campus housing for students, as well as attractive workforce apartments for local residents. It will also be available as a short term home to business and vacation travelers, as there will be opportunities for short-term stays.
Plaza Celia features one- and two-bedroom apartments, ranging from 700 to 905 square feet. The apartments will feature energy-efficient appliances and impact resistant, double-paned Low-E gas windows. Additionally, there will be off-street parking, as well as a rooftop common terrace available for all residents to enjoy.
Construction is to be completed by the winter of 2018.
