Kelley Kronenberg Commends Florida Lawmakers for Including Medical Marijuana in Recent Special Session

6/9/17

Kelley Kronenberg, a diverse, full-service business law firm with an active Regulated Substances Practice Group, commends Florida lawmakers for tackling the complexities of implementing Amendment 2, which Florida voters approved last fall.

“I think it’s important for the Legislature to set up a framework for the medical marijuana system in Florida, and I applaud lawmakers for including this issue in their special session,” said Howard L. Wander, Principal Partner and Chief Operating Officer, who leads the firm’s Regulated Substances Practice Group. “Now, the Florida Department of Health has some direction on how to implement Amendment 2 in a safe and effective way.”

The Legislature approved 10 new medical marijuana operator licenses to be issued in addition to the seven that had previously been awarded through a more limited medical marijuana law passed in 2014.

“This legislation will expand safe access to medical marijuana,” said Wander. “As such, we are prepared to advise corporate clients on any legal issues that are expected to arise, such as potential Workers’ Compensation claims, Labor and Employment matters, Litigation, and General Liability matters.”

Kelley Kronenberg has had a Regulated Substances Practice Group in place since 2014. From the outset, firm attorneys and personnel have been intricately involved in state legislation, legal issues and analysis related to Florida’s medical marijuana regulation and related business operations. The group works with entrepreneurs who are trying to get a foothold in the industry. The team also assists corporate clients and business owners to navigate new policies and procedures that may affect their organizations. In addition to Wander, Kelley Kronenberg’s Regulated Substances Practice Group includes Partners, Thomas Mersch and Angelo Filippi, and Attorney Vijay Choksi.

The legal team is assisted by non-lawyer, Seth Hyman, who actively lobbied for a Florida law that legalized a non-eutrophic strain of marijuana to help people like his daughter, Rebecca. She has a rare genetic disorder that makes her prone to constant violent seizures. Trying to make the most of his family’s situation, Hyman has become one of the most visible faces in Florida’s burgeoning medical marijuana industry.
