Brooks + Scarpa Architects awarded 2017 AIA Florida Object Award

Brooks + Scarpa Architects, a collective of architects, designers and creative thinkers dedicated to enhancing the human experience, has been awarded the 2017 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Florida Object Award for the original design of the public art piece installed at the entrance of the new Charles F. Dodge Pembroke Pines City Center, home to city hall, a performing arts hall and The Frank art gallery, in Pembroke Pines, Fla.

“This award speaks to how well Brooks + Scarpa understands and appreciates that public art should not be merely decoration or afterthought, but should enhance user experience and celebrate a space,” said Jill Slaughter, Chief Curator of The Frank, the multi-disciplinary two story art gallery and learning space at the City Center. “The sculpture provides a community anchor and further supports our dedication to social engagement and cultural connection.”

The Brooks + Scarpa Gateway sculpture, commissioned for the City Center plaza, evolved from the circular design of the City Center logo which was supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The sculpture was created with attending landscape features to complement the multiple activities and programs that are held at the Pembroke Pines City Center.

Fabricated and installed by YetiWeurks, a Colorado-based engineering consulting service for public artists, art fabricators and art project managers, the stainless steel Brooks + Scarpa sculpture piece emerges as tree columns that lead up to an array of perforated plates that look to spin in the breeze. The experience under the sculpturecreates a dappled light effect. Visitors are invited to observe Gateway from an adjacent seating area flanked by mounded planters.
