Joe Hernandez, Chair of the Real Estate Practice Group for Weiss Serota Helfman Cole & Bierman, recently moderated an important panel discussion for BISNOW. The event, titled “A New Frontier: Transit Oriented Development in South Florida,” featured numerous prominent business people focusing on the transportation, real estate and neighborhoods.

“I was happy to moderate the section titled ‘The Peebles Path to TODs’ featuring Don Peebles, who is a well-known real estate developer, author and activist,” said Hernandez. “This portion –along with the other panels – brought to light some of the challenges and opportunities regarding transit oriented developments in South Florida. Having developed TODs in other major cities in the U.S., Don brought great perspective to this issue.”

Other presentations were titled “Transit Oriented Development – Intersection of transit & real estate” and “Miami’s Transit Neighborhoods – Creating neighborhoods through transit hubs.”

Joe Hernandez has a robust transactional real estate and corporate practice, with experience that spans 30 years from his prior career as a real estate and corporate banker throughout his legal career. He focuses on complex commercial real estate and business transactions. His experience includes acquisitions, development, financing, leasing, joint ventures and advising clients in connection with raising capital for real estate projects in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Hernandez represents a variety of clients, including real estate developers, financial institutions, private equity firms, high net worth individuals, hotel companies, and public and private universities. He also represents banks and other lending institutions in secured corporate loan transactions, including revolving credit facilities, asset-based lending, and other secured lending facilities. He has extensive experience advising clients in the resolution of business disputes, including disputes amongst partners, shareholders or members.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers. His community involvement includes serving as a Board Member of Junior Achievement of Miami, where he previously served as Chairman. He is also a member of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Miami School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctor cum laude, after receiving his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida. He is admitted to the Florida Bar.
