Young At Art Museum Hosts Eco-Eggstravaganza! Eggdrop Contest

3/28/17

The Town of Davie Fire Department will drop hundreds of eggs from a 50-foot fire truck ladder during Young At Art Museum’s Eco-EGGstravaganza! and Egg Drop Contest, presented by FPL SolarNow,on Thursday, April 13 at 2 p.m. at the Museum, located at  751 SW 121st Ave. in Davie.

Prior to the Egg Drop, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., participants will decorate their egg and construct a protective shelter for it using a variety of “recycled building materials” such as paper bags, shredded paper, magazines and more in keeping with an Earth Day theme. A “challenge material” is always announced the day of event and must be used in the egg shelter design. Egg-building kits are $2.

Then at 2 p.m., children and their families gather outside to witness the eggs being dropped. The crowd is encouraged to make original signs while chanting “Drop the Eggs!” as they fall one-by-one from the ladder. Past signs have read ‘SPLAT!’ and ‘EGG-cellent’! Typically, about 200 eggs are dropped and less than a dozen survive. Prizes are awarded to the winners. New this year, visitors will get a chance to watch a drone demo and see if an egg will survive a fall from one of the flying machines.

A longtime, signature tradition at the museum held each spring, the EGGstravaganza! Egg Drop Contest this year is combined with Earth Day to encourage families to understand that art can be an instrument for positive environmental change.

“The Egg Drop is fun and engaging, but it’s also a teachable moment as the kids incorporate science, engineering and art into their project as they learn about protecting our environment,” said Mindy Shrago, Executive Director / CEO of Young At Art Museum. “We appreciate the amazing men and women of the Town of Davie Fire Department who help make our Eco-EGGstravaganza possible.”

During the Eco-EGGstravaganza, Museum visitors can take part in environmentally friendly art workshops, learn about healthy eating with our special guest Allyce from Wellness In The Schools from 11am-1:30 pm, and explore Young At Art Museum’s exhibition Hi Tech/ Lo Tech, presented by Capital One, until 5 p.m.

Sponsors include FPL SolarNow, BrightStar Credit Union, Capital One, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and the New York Life office of Hamid Coto Tabibi.

All activities are included with paid admission to Young At Art Museum: $14 per person; $12 for Broward County residents, seniors and children over age 1; and $11 for military members and their immediate families. For more information, call 954-424-5038 or visit YoungAtArtMuseum.org.
