Statewide law firm Broad and Cassel today announced the addition of Gary M. Freedman, who joins the firm’s Miami office as a partner in the Bankruptcy and Creditors’ Rights and Commercial Litigation practice groups.

Prior to joining the firm, Freedman was a partner at Tabas Freedman in Miami where he represented debtors, creditors, creditors’ committees and trustees, among others. He has nearly three decades of experience in bankruptcy and restructuring; complex business litigation; creditors’ rights; collection defense for judgement debtors; commercial foreclosure; director, officer, manager and member liability litigation; fraud litigation; and bank litigation.

“Gary is an exceptional business litigator, having been involved in some of the most complex and high stakes corporate and bankruptcy law matters here in South Florida over the last 15 years,” said Managing Partner Mark F. Raymond. “His expertise will be of great value to our clients and the firm especially given the evolving and expansive practice of bankruptcy law.”

Notably, Freedman served as the liquidating trustee in the world’s fifth largest cruise line’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy case in the Southern District of Florida. He also directed the investigation and recovery efforts in the Nevin Shapiro/Capitol Investments Ponzi scheme bankruptcy cases pending in South Florida.

“I’m pleased to be joining a full-service firm with a sterling reputation and vast expertise in a variety of practice areas,” said Freedman. “As my practice has grown over the past three decades, the matters have become more complex and high stakes. Joining Broad and Cassel will serve my clients well as I guide them through the ever-changing, widely competitive global marketplace.”

Originally from Massachusetts, Freedman has been a resident of South Florida for nearly 30 years and during that time has received numerous honors and awards, including being named a Most Effective Lawyers finalist in 2013 by the Daily Business Review and receiving the 2014 Global Award for Bankruptcy Litigation Attorney of the Year in Florida by Corporate INTL Magazine.

He received his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Rochester and earned his juris doctor from Emory University, where he served as the managing editor of the Bankruptcy Developments Journal.

An AV Preeminent®-rated attorney, Freedman is admitted to practice in Florida; Massachusetts; the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida; the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida; the U.S. Court of Federal Claims; and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

Freedman is a member of the Bankruptcy Bar Association for the Southern District of Florida and the American Bankruptcy Institute.
