James R. Harlan
Center for Family Services is proud to announce the addition of Rev. James R. Harlan to its Board of Directors.
Harlan brings extensive experience in a theological career to the Board, having served in a variety of roles in congregations small and large. He currently serves as the 12th rector of the Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach.
Alongside parish ministry, Harlan served in Colorado on the Standing Committee, the Commission on Ministry, the diocesan Board of Examining Chaplains, the Commission on Youth Ministry, and the board of directors of Cathedral Ridge, the diocese’s camp and conference center. He also taught Liturgics and Church History at the Iliff School of Theology in the Anglican Studies program and served for many years as a reader for the General Ordination Examination for the Episcopal Church’s General Board of Examining Chaplains.
In the Diocese of Southeast Florida, he currently serves as chair of the Constitution and Canons Committee, as Dean of the North Palm Beach Deanery, and on the Executive Board of the Diocese.
Since he was 20 years old, he has solely focused on serving the church, when he became an assistant youth minister at St. John’s Cathedral in Denver. Harlan, his wife, Eli, and their daughter, Hannah, are enjoying life in Palm Beach. After a productive tenure in Colorado, he loves that he can go out for a run or a bike ride almost every day of the year. Having served in the Navy, but never on a ship, he’s hoping that living just down the street from the ocean will offer opportunities to get to sea.
