Former President Claudia de la Cruz remains on board of directors; Matthew Bruno and Augusto Vidaurreta join organization aimed at quality care and education for local in-need youths
Claudia de la Cruz, Matthew Bruno and Augusto Vidaurreta join the Centro Mater Foundation’s board of directors
The Centro Mater Foundation—an organization which supports Centro Mater Child Care Services, Inc., a nonprofit that provides quality care and education to economically disadvantaged youths and their families in Miami-Dade County—is proud to announce new developments regarding its board of directors. Previous President Claudia de la Cruz will continue her involvement with Centro Mater as an esteemed board member, and noted community members Matthew Bruno and Augusto Vidaurreta have recently joined the organization.

Verdeja, Jr. “The dedication of these great individuals will be invaluable in carrying out Centro Mater’s mission to offer services aimed at empowering underprivileged families in our community.”
Claudia de la Cruz has been a dedicated supporter of the Centro Mater Foundation for more than 20 years—having most recently served as the organization’s president, a position she held from 2012 through 2015. She also served as president from 2004 through 2008. De la Cruz studied education at Boston College and the University of Miami, and was involved with the Miami-Dade County public school system for six years before her beginnings as a Centro Mater board member in 1993. De la Cruz sits on the board of trustees for Boston College and Catholic Health Services and is a member of the Council for Women of Boston College.
Matthew Bruno brings an extensive background in finance and accounting to the Centro Mater Foundation. He currently serves as vice president and corporate lending officer, middle market lender for Coral Gables-based Mercantil Commercebank. Bruno attended Florida International University, earning a bachelor’s degree in finance and a graduate certificate in foundations of accounting and auditing.
A Centro Mater alumnus, Augusto L. Vidaurreta is an entrepreneur and author. Throughout his career, he has held leadership positions at The Miami Herald Publishing Company, Arthur Andersen, The Systems Consulting Group, and Cambridge Technology Partners. He also sits on the board of advisors for Mobiquity, Inc. Vidaurreta earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Florida International University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Florida.
Centro Mater Child Care Services, Inc. was founded in 1968 by Mother Margarita Miranda Otero—a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart in Cuba—who after her immigration to Miami, recognized a desperate need for child care services among newly exiled Cuban families striving for financial independence. The nonprofit organization provides after-school care, summer programs, nutrition and wellness guidance, development assistance, and parent-focused instruction. Centro Mater caters to nearly 1,200 children and families annually at five accredited centers.
