Offshore Sailing School To Host Wounded Veterans On ft. Myers Beach, Florida


America’s #1 Sailing School based in Ft. Myers, Fla. is honored to host an upcoming regatta for the Wounded Veterans Adaptive Sailing Program at the Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina on Ft. Myers Beach October 5-6, 2015.

Offshore Sailing School founder Steve Colgate who was instrumental in arranging theevent said, “As we celebrate Independence Day and the many freedoms we hold dearly, we thank our veterans and are pleased to support the important work of the Wounded Veteran Retreat Program.”

Established by retired Command Sgt. Maj. Nelson Corbin, the Wounded Veterans Adaptive Sailing Program is designed to work within the Vision and Mission of Wounded Veterans Retreat Program (WVRP), which is “to enhance the lives of our wounded veterans and their families, and to help reduce the amount of veterans’ suicides nationwide.”Corbin emphasized that “each sailing event involves team building, developing individual skills, social activities, and building self-confidence” which are allmust-do items to enhance their way of life. WVRP is a 501c3 non-profit organization and is Disabled Veteran owned and Disabled Veteran operated.

Offshore Sailing School is providing use of its Colgate 26 fleet and instructors to conduct an orientation of the vessels and local waterways, and run the Regatta for the 20 Wounded Veteran participants who have progressed through WVRP’s Adaptive Sailing Program. Nelson Corbin is a graduate of the Offshore Sailing School Fast Track to Cruising Course, which he took this summer at Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina. Steve Colgate and Doris Colgate met Corbin during that course. “It was obvious that the wounded veterans really enjoy the team work required to handle a sailboat well in all conditions,” explained Steve Colgate, who recently helped Corbin secure a week-long charter with The Moorings for a WVRP sailing excursion in the British Virgin Islands in January 2016. Offshore Sailing School’s eight locations include three resort-based campusesin Florida (Captiva Island, Ft. Myers Beach and St. Petersburg) and two in the British Virgin Islands on Scrub Island and Tortola. The company operates three schools on New York Harbor, (Pier 25 in Tribeca, North Cove Marina in Battery Park City, and Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City, NJ).
