One of the 2015 Cypress Lake Sailing Team boats
On Monday, July 6, Offshore Sailing School is again running a week-long learn to sail and team building program, free of charge, for students from Cypress Lake Middle School in Ft. Myers. This annual event is now in its third year and provides fun and challenging exercises ashore and under sail for 15 students who earned a place on this year’s Cypress Lake Sailing Team.
To prepare for this special week of sail-training and team building, students are sent the Offshore Sailing School Fast Track to Sailing textbook (written by Offshore owners Steve and Doris Colgate). Teams of five are assigned to three Colgate 26 sailboats, each team with a dedicated Offshore Sailing School instructor who guides them through the Offshore Sailing School Learn to Sail course. “It is such a pleasure to see how involved the kids get in learning to sail,” says Steve Colgate, founder and chairman of Ft. Myers-based Offshore Sailing School.
The program runs 8:30-11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday starting July 6. In addition to learning to sail, participants enjoy fun competitions to stretch problem-solving imaginations. A regatta on Friday gives each student the chance to take the helm and help steer their boat first over the finish line.
1st, 2nd and 3rd place Olympic-style medals that were donated by Roberts Advertising in Ft. Myers will be awarded at a lunch at Bowditch Park after the regatta, where food and beverages are provided by parents of the participants. Each student goes home with a medal and a certificate attesting to completion of the Learn to Sail course.
Offshore Sailing School’s eight locations include three resort-based campuses in Florida (Captiva Island, Ft. Myers Beach and St. Petersburg) and two in the British Virgin Islands on Scrub Island and Tortola. The company operates three schools on New York Harbor, (Pier 25 in Tribeca, North Cove Marina in Battery Park City, and Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City, NJ). Sailing programs include lessons and rides, and sailing certification courses from Learn to Sail and Performance Sailing, to Bareboat Charter Cruising and Passage Making. Offshore Sailing School also hosts corporate team building programs and group regattas. The company’s two sailing clubs offer members unlimited use of its Colgate 26 fleet from Colgate Offshore Sailing Club in Jersey City, NJ, and North Cove Sailing Club in Battery Park City.
